MENTORING
Every now and then I like to support others in their creative odyssey, accompanying them on the path towards publication. This process can take many forms, ranging from minimal guidance to extensive collaborative work. Unlike editorial input (see below) mentoring sees me involved from the project's outset. Currently I specialise in commercial adult fiction, memoir, creative non-fiction, literary fiction and the short story. My aim always is not only to assist you in writing the best book you can; I am also invested in you the writer, empowering you with literary skills to last a lifetime. Many of my clients have achieved publication following our time together.
All collaborations include 1-2-1 telephone or Zoom consultations throughout. For an initial free consultation on how we might work together, do get in touch.
EDITORIAL
I also offer a range of editorial services and have been editing fiction for more than 15 years, including for literary journals and publishing houses. I have a passion for bringing new authors' work to a wider audience, be it with significant structural changes or a final polish before submission.
Below are the types of editorial work I offer, though I am open to a combination of these.
Editorial Review
I will read your manuscript / story and provide a detailed 6 - 8 page editorial report. There will be no line edits or in-text comments, but I will offer comprehensive insight into the strengths and weaknesses of your work, and what I feel you need to do to bring it up to publishable standard.
Structural Edit
A broader edit, more of an overhaul, where I tackle significant aspects such as character development, plot and structure. I may suggest changing scenes or point of view, re-ordering chapters. This is for you if your book / story is complete but at a developmental stage.
Copy Edit
This includes extensive line edits, making use of in-text comments to really get deep into the work, giving it a thorough polish as I would a book due for publication. I will address aspects of grammar, pacing, style, voice, phrasing - basically anything I feel will elevate the work. This is for you if your work is in good shape but would benefit from a professional editorial eye.
I can also offer bespoke advice on how and where to submit your work, be this an agent, a publishing house or a literary journal. If I feel strongly about the book I may also introduce you to industry insiders.
Our working relationship may consist of a single session, or be spread across a year or more.
For a free consultation just drop me a note. I look forward to hearing from you and helping to bring your awesome words into the world.

ENDORSEMENTS
"Yes, Tom has a vast knowledge of technique, form, and structure; and yes, he is an insightful literary critic with a craftsman's eye for detail and a reader's ear for tone; but it's his ability to elevate writers, to enhance their craft beyond a single work, and to guide them towards independent self-discovery that makes him the very best. Tom is a great editor because he is a great teacher."
Caroline K
"I found Tom's acute, forensic and positive guidance invaluable as I worked through several drafts of my novel with him. Always honest and painstakingly precise, it was a joy and an education to work under his tutelage."
Neil R
"Tom is not only a brilliant writer but also a highly supportive mentor who is open, honest and true and always offers useful feedback and guidance, encouraging would-be writers to take risks and find their own voice."
Marie B
"Tom gave me a superbly helpful review of my short story, along with some invaluable general guidance on the short story form in general. It was amazing to get this critical feedback and guidance from the mind of a prize-winning author in the form, also in a great turnaround time and at a very accessible price."
